Sugarite Canyon State Park
In the good ole summertime, this beautiful historic park 11 miles northeast of Raton offers fishing
on three lakes, picnicking, hiking and overnight camping at the Soda Pocket and Lake Alice campgrounds.
Riotous color bursts across the landscape - 120 acres full of wild iris in late May, wild rose, bluebell, larkspur
and scarlet penstemon in July, and the late-summer hues of aster, sunflower, blue flax and Mexican hat.
People who crave winter adventure know that Sugarite (pronounced sugar-eet) is a prime spot for cross-county skiing
and ice-fishing in a climate that is cold but never prohibitive to outdoor fun.
Lake Maloya, the centerpiece of the park, reflects the constant fluctuations of the northern New Mexico sky. Visitors
quickly discover they've reached an area steeped in history and full of the challenge and beauty of life in the
southern Rocky Mountains. |
