Maxwell & Springer
Both pro and novice fishing enthusiasts reel in spectacular catches at lakes in and around Maxwell,
27 miles south of Raton, and Springer, another 18 miles. Two expansive lakes in Maxwell border the world-famous
Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge. Springer Lake is home to record-setting pike-fishing. Fish till you drop on the
gorgeous Charrette lakes, 18 miles southwest of Springer.
The Santa Fe Trail Museum in Springer honors the gutsy men and women who rumbled across the unknown plains of the
western United States. The Livery Stable, built in 1880, when horses and wagons were the way you got around, now
houses one of the largest collections of period and post-period antiques in the Southwest.
View the enchanting spectacle of migratory birds flocking to the Maxwell National Wildlife refuge every year. Ducks,
geese, mallards, kingfishers, bald eagles - if you haven't seen them up-close, you're missing out. Across the refuge's
2,800 acres, there's also plenty of opportunity for camping, picnicking, hiking, bird-watching and just about any
other outdoor activity that grabs you.
