Folsom
& Capulin
Take a leisurely drive over picturesque Johnson Mesa to Folsom, an easy 39 miles east of Raton.
Gaze down at languid, rolling hills and rocky, tree-lined mountains embedded with the signature colors of the Southwest.
You'll be swept away by the sight of the Sierra Grande, the largest single mountain in the United States. It won't
take long to learn why northeast New Mexico is known as one of the most beautiful regions on earth.
Tour the historic Stone Church and Folsom Museum, and visit the historic site where in 1926 an arrowhead was discovered
that scientists believe prove that man existed in the New World at least 10,000 years ago. You can also take in
Folsom Falls, a lavish, spring-fed waterfall that will amaze you with its sharpness and beauty.
At the Capulin Volcano National Monument, 30 miles east of Raton, set off on a one-mile walk that circles the crater
rim of this massive volcano. At 8,182 feet, lift your eyes and see points in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Texas
and, of course, New Mexico.
If you want more excitement than rim-walking, this is one of the few places in the world where you can actually
walk right into a volcano. A self-guided tour takes you to the vent at the bottom of the crater, a trip you won't
soon forget. And no worries - you missed the last eruption by about 60,000 years. |
