Hunting

Hunting opportunities abound in our area. Species include Elk, Deer, Antelope, Turkey, Bear and Cougar. The hunting units included in this area are 54, 55A, 56 & 57. Hunting licenses can be obtained over the counter (OTC), by state draw or through landowners.

ELK: license by draw or landowner permit. Resident fee $55 to $78. Nonresident fee $300 to $775.

Landowner certificates are issued to ranches and are valid August 30 - January 31 and are for rifle and muzzleloader hunters only. These hunts are restricted to any five consecutive day period agreed upon by hunter and landowner.

Draw licenses are available in four types: Standard, Quality, High Demand and Quality/High Demand. Draw licenses are valid only for a specific hunter in a specific area for the dates designated on the license issued.

DEER: license by draw or OTC.

When obtaining an Over The Counter license you must decide the sporting arm type, a unit that is open to OTC hunters and a corresponding hunt period. Hunt dates are November 1 - 18. OTC license fees: Resident $26 Nonresident $190.

Draw licenses are allotted by random computerized drawing. The deadline for applying is April 26 for hunt dates of November 1 - 18. Draw license fees: Resident $32 Nonresident $196 to $316.

ANTELOPE: license by draw or landowner permit. Dates are August 23-25.

Draw licenses are assigned to a particular ranch to hunt. Draw license fees: Resident $39 Nonresident $202.

Landowner licenses are obtained from participating landowners. Landowner license fees: Resident $98 Nonresident $211

TURKEY: There is a spring and a fall season for turkey and they are available for OTC or Draw. Sporting arms for this hunt are shotgun or bow only. The spring season goes from April 15 through May 10. The fall season goes from September 15-23.

OTC fees are Resident $15 Nonresident $75 In the spring season a second tag is available for $10.

Draw hunt applications have a deadline of February 1 for a season of April 15-30. There is a one turkey bag limit and the hunter can take a second turkey in other open areas.

BEAR: licenses are available from draw or OTC. Licenses must be purchased two days prior to hunt. License fees are Resident $33 Nonresident $160. The tagged bear must be presented to a Department of Game and Fish Office. Bear baiting/trapping is not legal. Dogs are allowed in certain units.

OTC hunt dates are August 1-29 & September 25 - November 15. Draw dates are August 1 -31.

COUGAR: licenses are available OTC. Licenses must be purchased two days before hunt. License fees are: Resident $33 Nonresident $210. The tagged animal must be presented to a district field officer or Department of Game & Fish office within 5 days. Dogs are allowed when hunting cougar, baiting is not allowed.

Cougar season is Oct. 1 through March 31 or until harvest objectives have been met within the specific cougar zone, whichever occurs first. The quota for this area is 38, which includes zones Z, P & D. Call (877) 950-5466 toll free or check the Game & Fish website at
www.gmfsh.state.nm.us to determine if the harvest quota has been met. If so that zone will close 72 hours later.
