Cimarron
& Palisades
As you enter the town 40 miles west of Raton, history comes alive at the Old Mill, Seaton and Kit
Carson museums and the wonderful St. James Hotel. Take the Historic Walking Tour of old Cimarron and experience
the way of life that defined the Old West.
Outdoor adventure at Cimarron Canyon State Park awaits those with a passion for hiking, biking, camping and stream-fishing.
Rock formations 40 million years old and rising to 800 feet in Cimarron Canyon will astound you with their hugeness
and power. This is the Palisades. Experience it once, and it's with you always.
And if you've never witnessed a majestic elk standing tall and proud, then you have to spend some time in the Valle
Vidal, part of the 1.6-million-acre Carson National Forest. Here you may also see black bear, bobcat, coyote, deer,
wild turkey and other game in their natural habitat as you camp and fish in this pristine wilderness whose name
means "Valley of Abundant Life."
Cimarron is home to the world-famous Philmont Scout Ranch. Thousands of Boy Scouts from around the country descend
on the ranch every summer to explore and learn across 137,000 acres of rugged mountain terrain.
Scouts and scout masters participate in rock-climbing, horseback-riding, archeological explorations, conservation
activities and training, and challenging 12-day treks that test the skills the scouts have been accumulating within
their home troops all year.
With much of its 214 square miles situated within the untouched back country of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains,
Philmont gives every scout a taste of the real West that they'll savor forever.
