The Raton Chamber of Commerce is very fortunate to have one part-time paid staff member, Melissa Unger, and several volunteer staff who keep the Raton Visitor Center open seven days a week. If you are interested in volunteering at the Visitor Center, or in volunteering to help promote our community and businesses in and around Raton, please contact Melissa at (575)445-3689. We would love to have you join us!
|I was born in Winslow Arizona and have resided most of my life in New Mexico. 15 years of which have been in Colfax County. I have a Bachelors degree in Education and a diverse background in work experience from teaching elementary school to restaurant and coffee shop management, ranching, wedding planning, catering, floral design, health and wellness coaching, and a busy soap company where I make home made soap in my kitchen. A mother of 4 successful children and married to my best friend, I enjoy life to the fullest and have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. I am an outdoors enthusiast and love golfing and riding my Harley through the beautiful byways and highways of New Mexico. Life is a adventure of exploration and worthy of enjoying every step of the journey.|
Born in a small town east of Perth Western Australia, Australia, I spent my first 17 years there. In 1981 I met my future husband, who was in the US Navy 1978 – 1986, US Army 1986 – 1999. Since then we have traveled extensively throughout Europe and the US, during that time I have worked in many different places both abroad and in the US in retail, non-profit and volunteer work. I have been able to adapt to almost any situation with aplomb and guide my family’s daily lives with minimal personal or familial disruption.
I’ve learned over several long-term deployments of my husband to handle crisis, all facets of financial management and organization. The military life leaves little to chance and teaches the proactive values of planning and organization, instead of retroactive crisis management. These values and skills are not something that can be learned in a classroom, but are hard-won lessons gleaned in the arena of daily life in a variety of cultures and venues.
My husband has been working in Raton for 9+ years, we bought a home and plan on retiring here. During the time I have been in Raton I have enjoyed the community and the people, volunteering at The Old Pass Gallery and The Visitors Center. I also am on several city boards and will do all I can to better the community.
